Sprint tree. In 2004 fruit tree nursery Carolus developed the sprint tree. After a 2-year growing cycle, we can offer the sprint tree as a feathered tree with a large volume.
At the development of this type of tree, the production and the level of investment at the start were very important. As from the second year, a great harvest can be picked. The sprint tree is often used for the table system [tafelsysteem] (photo), a system of which the starting costs are lower. In general, this means that the grower gets more breading space during the planting. The amount of the investment is lower and because you can pick sooner, the investment is paid off sooner.
V-hedge: In the 90's tree nursery Carolus helped to develop the V-hedge system. This system was developed in order to reduce the work pressure in the orchard. This exceptional tree shape has the highest production possible (80 tons/Ha instead of 40 tons/Ha concerning Conference). This type of tree is still a good alternative for the traditional system.
After a two-year cycle, 4 equal branches (planted on the same height) are kept. During the planting, these 4 branches are guided separately with the view to optimal lighting and yield.
Candleholder system: For this system, the same kind of trees are used as for the V-hedge system (3 branches of equal quality without top). The planting system recommended is different from the V-hedge system. The standard planting distance is 3,50 x 1,20m (2143 trees/Ha). The standard planting distance for the V-hedge system is 3,20 x 1,00m (2813 trees/Ha). The candleholder system is less labour intensive than the V-hedge system. Also the costs of the candleholder system are lower for both the construction as the maintenance. But the investment of the V-hedge system is paid off sooner because of the higher yield.
Traditional: The traditional tree is cut at 70 centimeters the first year. Then 4 good construction branches and a steady heart branch are kept.
